Affirming Mental Health and Recovery Care for LGBTQ+ Adults

A clinical environment where your identity is respected, your story is heard, and your treatment is built around who you actually are.

We Work With Most Insurances Including:

Introduction

For many LGBTQ+ adults, finding a mental health or recovery program where they can be fully themselves is its own challenge — often layered on top of the symptoms that brought them in. Past experiences with dismissive providers, religious harm, family rupture, or environments that quietly required self-editing can make the idea of treatment feel exposing rather than safe.

At Huntington Beach Mental Health, our LGBTQ+ affirming program is designed so that your identity is never the work — your healing is. Sexual orientation, gender identity, and relationship structure are treated as known, respected facts about your life, not topics to be debated, scrutinized, or set aside while we focus on “the real issue.” The real issue gets addressed in the context of a whole, real person.

“Affirming care” is not a label we use lightly. It is a clinical standard our staff is trained in and held to.

Who This Program Supports

This track is appropriate for LGBTQ+ adults who are navigating one or more of the following:

  • Depression, anxiety, panic, or persistent low mood
  • Trauma and PTSD, including identity-based trauma, religious trauma, conversion practices harm, and intimate partner violence
  • Minority stress, internalized stigma, and the cumulative effects of discrimination
  • Family-of-origin rupture, estrangement, or coming-out aftermath
  • Relationship and intimacy concerns, including those specific to non-monogamous, polyamorous, or queer relational structures
  • Gender dysphoria and the mental health dimensions of transition
  • Substance use and co-occurring disorders, including chemsex and party-and-play patterns
  • Suicidality and self-harm, which LGBTQ+ adults experience at disproportionately higher rates

How Our Clinical Approach Differs

Identity is a starting point, not a presenting problem

Our intake process does not pathologize being LGBTQ+. Coming out is not treated as a symptom. Being trans is not treated as a diagnosis. Your relationship is not assumed to be the cause of your distress unless the clinical picture actually points there.

Trauma-informed across the board

We use evidence-based trauma modalities — including EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and somatic approaches — adapted for the kinds of trauma our LGBTQ+ clients commonly carry: chronic invalidation, identity-based violence, religious and family harm, and the slower-moving wound of having to perform a self that wasn’t yours.

Stigma is named, not ignored

Internalized homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia are addressed directly in individual and group work. We treat them as injuries, not character flaws — and we don’t expect clients to have already finished that work before showing up.

Recovery without erasure

For clients in recovery from substance use, we recognize that LGBTQ+ social life has historically centered on environments where substances are present. Treatment planning includes realistic, affirming strategies for community, connection, and sober identity that don’t ask clients to disappear from their own lives.

What Treatment Looks Like

Care is individualized and may include any combination of the following, based on a comprehensive clinical assessment:

  • Individual therapy with clinicians experienced in LGBTQ+ care
  • Process and skills groups, including identity-specific group options
  • Medication management with prescribers who understand HRT interactions and PrEP-related considerations
  • Family and couples sessions, including chosen-family inclusion
  • Trauma-focused therapy (EMDR, CPT, somatic work)
  • Dual-diagnosis treatment for co-occurring substance use
  • Discharge planning that connects clients to affirming community resources in Orange County and beyond

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be “out” to receive care here?

No. Many of our clients are not fully out, are out only in some areas of their lives, or are still working out language for themselves. Disclosure happens at your pace. What we ask is that you not be expected to hide who you are while you’re in our care.

Are your staff actually trained, or is this just marketing?

Our clinicians complete ongoing training in LGBTQ+ affirming care, minority stress models, and gender-affirming clinical practice. Staff who are not a good fit for this work do not staff this program.

Will my pronouns and chosen name be used in records?

Yes. Chosen name and pronouns are used in clinical documentation and day-to-day interactions. Where legal name is required for insurance or licensing reasons, we handle that quietly and respectfully.

Do you work with trans and nonbinary clients specifically?

Yes. We provide affirming mental health care for trans and nonbinary adults and coordinate with outside gender-affirming medical providers when relevant. We do not require clients to justify or explain their identity to receive care.
